Physical bodies
textbooks nis edu kz
Look at the objects on your table and in your C D
classroom. All these objects can be called physical
bodies because they have a definite shape and size.
Studying them from the point of view of Physics,
you will be able to define what they are made of,
what shape they have and how long they can keep
this shape – or, in the case of liquids, how they are
continuously changing. It is important to know
E F
whether you are examining an object or a body.
For example: a wall is made of concrete. In this
case, the concrete is the matter and the wall is the
physical body.
Physical quantities
So far we have learnt about physical bodies and
G H
objects and physical phenomena. We must now
understand how the observations we make help
us understand the quantities we can observe.
A physical quantity is a value that describes
the properties of a physical body or physical
phenomena. A physical quantity can be measured by
instruments or calculated using a mathematical
I J
equation, when it combines other physical
quantities. Each physical quantity has its own name
and symbol. For example: distance (length), time,
energy and temperature are all physical quantities
because they can be measured. There are many
other types of physical quantities that you will learn
throughout this course.
